The artist
François Carrière de Glencoe
François Carrière, also known as De Glencoe, is a self-taught painter living in the Dordogne region of France. His painting, born from an inner necessity, explores emotion, flesh, memory, and the darker aspects of humanity. Coffee, colors, textures, and incisive gestures compose canvases influenced by Bacon, Van Gogh, and Bowie, which provoke questions more than they seduce.

The canvas is an illusion: this is no longer painting, but a sculptural creation, almost surgical. At the heart of this material emerges an embryo, frozen in the convolutions of a large intestine modeled in extruded foam. Heated plastic bags, stretched into straps, bind the colonic loops together, holding the fetus in place: captive, suspended, in a gestation of shadow. The infant's skull is adorned with gold and silver dots, neuronal figures connected by axons of paint. The rest of the body, reduced to a skeletal state, seems simultaneously to be born and to rot in the depths of this material. Here, the work draws inspiration from an ancient, tragically beautiful vision: that of the Cathars, who saw in the material world the very manifestation of Hell. For them, to exist was to fall. But traversing matter was perhaps also the only path to the Light. This fruit of the womb is a passage, a painful, impure but necessary incarnation.
